The training and development activities cost a lot for the employees and students of any organization. In the US, people are spending $60 to $70 billion a year for the purpose of training. Similarly, in Australia, companies spend $5 billion a year for good training of their employees. Even with this massive spending, there is a huge demand and need for good trainers. With this arising problem, there is a need to understand what training is. Who needs them and who are capable to provide the training? The effectiveness of the training comes from the source who is the trainer which is playing a critical role for the organization discipline.

      Four important elements of learning

The quality of a good trainer depends upon these critical elements that assure a good learning environment for everybody.

      • Motivation
      • Reinforcement
      • Retention
      • Transference

A good trainer has a huge responsibility and should be able to:

      • Plan and organize new experiences for effective learning
      • Should be able to communicate and be the center of attention in a room
      • Build up an environment suitable for every person
      • Support the trainees and help them to be better in the learning process
      • Use bonus points as an encouraging tool for faster learning
      • Motivate the trainee and check their progress on a daily basis

Individuals do not learn from experiences. The progress of their learning is done through their reaction to the experience. The reaction can be controlled, monitored and motivated by a good trainer.

      Qualities of good trainers

Here are some qualities that every trainer should possess for an effective learning system.

Able to understand and share feelings

Empathy makes you understand the fears and uncertainties ones have in his or her mind during the training. It’s like putting yourself in the shoes of other person and being able to understand what people feel. A person who can understand and emit the fears and uncertainties of a person is known to be a good trainer.

      Honesty and patience

No doubt, these two play the central role in good training. Everybody has a weakness or fear. And, as a trainer, one should be able to accept his or her mistakes or weaknesses and should be able to share. Like what you learned from your mistakes and how you overcome your fears etc. This builds up a bond of honesty and everyone can be open about their ideas or experiences. When it comes to patience, it is very necessary to get a hold of yourself. As a trainer, one will always see slow progress & low productivity. But you must refrain yourself from the anger and be patient. Cut down the long process, techniques and try to blend things in a fun way to ensure everyone understands it.

      Ability to listen

A good trainer must possess the quality of ability to listen. Hearing questions and answering them would reflect that you possess a listening quality which will help everyone to speak up.

Excellent research, knowledge and be up to date

As a trainer, it is essential to have good research skill. The knowledge you are providing should be authentic and research-based. Another important point which makes you a good trainer is being up to date. Whatever you are training about, you should have the knowledge about the current status of related subject.

      Speed

Everyone has their own external speed to talk or do something. But, as a trainer, you must maintain the speed according to the students or trainees. It is far better to take it slow and achieve the goals than pushing the words into their brain without even understanding it. Some organizations do prefer quick results but great things take time. So, it is better to let them learn and get the value of the expense of training.

      Purpose of training

The trainer should always remember the purpose of training. Why are you hired? What is the end result you want to achieve? The sole purpose of the training is to achieve something. Be keen and keep your eyes fixed on the end goal to be a good trainer.

      Respect the experienced ones

It’s common that even the managers or employees above age take training to know about the latest trends, technology, strategies and anything related to their business. As a young trainer, you must possess the skill of respecting the experienced ones. You might know better but you still have to give them the respect they actually deserve.

“So, here are some of the qualities that make up a good trainer. Organizations should be keener and more responsible for choosing someone to train. So, they can get the work done in the right manner of time and without wasting any money.”
